Coordination by means of Multi Agents systems is a field that receives a growing attention in scientific literature. From a logistical point of view the concept is interesting, since it may offer a solution where central coordination fails to. In several Supply Chain problems we deal with independent and competing firms that depend on each other to perform efficiently. To give an example: trucking companies that have to pick-up a container at a terminal want to have short turn-around times. The terminal on the other hand wants to have a high utilization of its truck loading activities. These two interests may conflict.

At the University of Twente we introduced the concept Planning Apart Together. The idea is that companies stay independent and in a competitive relation to each other, but are able to operate efficiently through smart information exchange. Next>>
